Writer/Director Pier Paolo Pasolini's Biblical drama, The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, is a gripping, neo-realistic depiction of the life of Jesus Christ that is strikingly different from many Hollywood treatments of the subject. Shot among the hills of Basilicata in southern Italy, Pasolini's documentary-style camera captures Christ's meetings with the men who were to become his disciples, the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, and the Crucifixion. The intensely spiritual tone of the film is enhanced by an impassioned score, including works from Bach, Mozart and Prokofiev. Given Pasolini's reputation as a radical, he might have seemed an unlikely candidate to make a film about Christ, but critics generally agree that he made a film that ranks among the finest religious films ever made.
